Beşiktaş wins Turkish Süper Lig title after last clear week

Beşiktaş made no mistakes in the crucial last week, beating Istanbul rival Galatasaray on goal difference to win their first Turkish Süper Lig title in four seasons.

The Black Eagles won a 2-1 victory over Göztepe in Izmir on Saturday, claiming their 16th overall title. The Izmir club finished the season in 10th place.

Croatian defender Domagoj Vida gave Beşiktaş the lead in the 10th minute in Izmir, but Alpaslan Öztürk equalized for host Göztepe 14 minutes later.

As the pressure mounted as rival Galatasaray on the other side of town led their game, Algerian winger Rachid Ghezzal, on loan from Leicester City, scored the game-winning goal for Be 69iktaş from the penalty spot in the 69th minute. . The two teams entered the last week tied with 81 points.

The champions’ usual savage celebrations in Turkey’s largest city have been muted as the country is stranded due to a recent spike in coronavirus cases. However, crowds of fans, many of whom wore no masks and ignored social distancing rules, filled the streets of the Beşiktaş neighborhood and other parts of the country in low-key celebrations.

The victory relieved Beşiktaş in an otherwise nervous end to the season, with losses in both of their previous matches. Last weekend they lost 3-1 away to Galatasaray, who have won their last six games.

Beşiktaş last won the title from Süper Lig in the 2016-17 season, but his fortunes have picked up again this season under the guidance of coach Sergen Yalçın, a former star player at the club.

The team is led by Canadian midfielder Atiba Hutchinson, and his compatriot forward Cyle Larin has been the club’s top scorer this season with 19 goals. Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar contributed 15 more.

Beşiktaş has the chance to win the national double on Tuesday when he faces Antalyaspor in the Turkish Cup final.

President Erdoğan congratulates Beşiktaş

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkish Minister of Youth and Sports Mehmet Kasapoğlu congratulated Beşiktaş on the team’s national triumph.

Erdoğan on Twitter congratulated the team and their fans “wholeheartedly” on winning the 2021 title.

Minister Kasapoğlu also congratulated the Black Eagles, its players, technical staff, board members and fans on their success.

Galatasaray so close, yet so far

Galatasaray finished the season in second behind Beşiktaş with one goal away, netting the second ticket to the Champions League qualifiers.

League leader Beşiktaş racked up 84 points in 42 weeks, but the Black Eagles suffered a shocking 2-1 home loss to mediocre Fatih Karagümrük on Tuesday, risking title chances.

The Lions have been encouraged by the latest victories, with the team winning their last six straight games. The victories included a 3-1 derby victory over Beşiktaş on May 8 and a 4-1 away win on Tuesday against already relegated Yukatel Denizlispor to tie with Beşiktaş in the standings.

In the last game, the Lions welcomed Helenex Yeni Malatyaspor to Istanbul, beating the mediocre opponent 3-1.

It was the second time that Galatasaray lost the trophy on goal difference. Coincidentally, the last time was also against Beşiktaş in the 1985/86 season.

One of Istanbul’s greats, third-placed Fenerbahçe had the slimmest chances of winning the title and looked a long way from that goal with a victory in added time against a modest Kayserispor.

The Yellow Canaries, long second behind Beşiktaş, scored 82 points with a 2-1 away win at Kayseri.

Kayserispor finished the season in 17th place with 41 points, surviving relegation just one point behind relegated BB Erzurumspor.

This season, Fenerbahçe has shown perseverance with a firm grip on the title race but was beaten 2-1 by Demir Grup Sivasspor at the Ülker Şükrü Saraçoğlu stadium in Istanbul in a serious loss to the Yellow Canaries. The defeat dragged Fenerbahçe from second place.
