Motorcycle tours in Turkey: everything you need to know

Interest in motorcycles has increased in Turkey and abroad in recent years as understanding of travel changes and they realize the practicality of the vehicle, especially in high traffic cities.

Even during the pandemic period, its popularity continued to increase due to a growing interest in nature and a desire to be freer, said Sarper Sesli, the founder of Ride the Earth motorcycle tours in Turkey. .

Taking a motorcycle trip can be very difficult for beginners. There are some rules you’ll want to follow, such as proper training, regular maintenance of your motorcycle, and protective gear.

“Although I think there is no season when motorcycles cannot be used, I would say the following to people who do not prefer to ride in winter: if your motorcycle has been in a garage all winter it would be good if you take it to a mechanic for maintenance before the start of the season so that you are well prepared, ”Sesli said.

“In addition, just as we have to keep our engines in good condition, the driver has to do a short warm-up training for reflexes and mental rejuvenation, which is the right procedure for a safer start to the season,” a- he added.

“They can take this training from brands or people they trust and who are authorized to provide such training,” Sesli said.

What about Turkey?

For bikers, Turkey is a wonderful country with abundant and unique roads.

“Apart from the traditional Aegean routes, Central Anatolia is one of my favorites. Mainly the village roads connecting Kayseri, Cappadocia, Niğde and Aladağlar. I would suggest the Köroğlu mountains in Bolu province for offroad enthusiasts. For example, the roadavşat route, in the northeast of the province of Artvin, is one of the best motorcycle routes in the world. You can follow an exciting route from the northeast of Ardahan to Şavşat and Hopa. I finished this route starting from the east of Van. There are also adventurous routes around Mount Ağrı (Ararat) for off-road enthusiasts, ”Sesli noted.

For off-road enthusiasts, the Taurus Mountains could also be an amazing option. There is also another route that starts from the south-east of Mardin and extends to Istanbul, encompassing the south-east and central Anatolia, which would be a memorable trip in terms of history and culture. , as well as natural beauty and delicious food.

How to choose the right motorcycle and the right equipment

There are hundreds of different types and designs of motorcycles on the market and choosing the right one can be confusing.

“The right motorcycle is one that you feel safe and comfortable on,” Sesli said, adding that testing a motorcycle before you buy one is a very smart decision.

When choosing a motorcycle, you must first decide whether you plan to use it in the city, for long distance trips or for off-road trips. Based on this, you can choose the type of motorcycle and make the right decision.

“If we’re talking about protective gear, there’s one thing I mean. The right equipment will get you out of the hospital faster in the worst case, ”Sesli noted.

Protecting yourself on the road is one of the most important aspects if you are planning a motorcycle trip.

Some of the things we need to pay attention to when choosing the right safety gear are:

Helmet

Your head circumference should be taken first and when you put the helmet on according to your height there should be no pressure on your head or forehead. The helmet you wear should not be so tight that it will give you a headache after a while. Also, after adjusting the chin bar, you can find the appropriate size by trying to turn your head inside the helmet. Your head should not be able to move freely inside. Also, the fact that the visor can be locked will be an advantage in crosswinds. Finally, be sure to check the helmet’s production dates when purchasing.

Coat and pants

If you prefer textiles, it is definitely worth choosing fabrics that are resistant to heat or weathering. You should be able to freely open and close the zippers on your coat while wearing gloves, and your suit should also have good ventilation. Another important point is to use colorful or reflective clothing so that it is easily visible on the road. For waterproofing, you can choose a three season option that is suitable for all seasons. However, you will be more comfortable if your raincoat is removable.

The coat must absolutely have protection for the shoulders, elbows and back. Otherwise, must be worn outdoors. The pants must have protections for the hips and the knees. Finally, be careful not to carry hard objects in your pockets during your trip.

Gloves and shoes

This equipment protects the two points of the body which are injured most often even when traveling at low speed. For this reason, you can ride comfortably and safely if your boots protect the shin, fully encompass the foot, and protect the Achilles heel.

It will be better if you have waterproof and breathable shoes, but it is not essential.

The gloves should fit the size of your hand, your fingers should move comfortably while gripping the clutch and front brake, and there are ventilation holes that vary for summer or winter options.

“Finally, I would like to talk about the type of protection that is not very common in Turkey, and that is neck protection. In the event of a possible accident, it prevents your neck from breaking. You can no longer run without neck protection in many well-known races around the world. I think this protection is essential, ”Sesli said.

Training

“Education is a must! But remember, a bad education is a bad education. Please don’t learn from someone who just knows how to ride a motorcycle, but from an institution or someone who has a license to train, ”Sesli said.

First of all, it is important to take safe riding training after the beginner and intermediate level training to increase motorcycle control.

“Depending on the destination of the motorcycle tours that I organize, I ask participants about their level of experience. For asphalt circuits, I want both training and at least 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) of experience. For off-road circuits, off-road training and 2,000-kilometer off-road experience are absolutely necessary, ”said Sisli.
