#36 Women’s Tennis Upset by NYU, 5-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – The visiting New York University women’s tennis team won a pair of three-setter matches today as the Violets beat No. 36-ranked Brandeis 5-4. at the Cordish Tennis Center. With the loss, the Judges drop to 3-8 on the season, while the Violets improve to 3-4.

Brandeis, who lost his third straight game 5-4, started strong with a 2-1 lead after a double. First years Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) and Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College) opened with an 8-2 win at No. 3 over Lynn Robinson and Phoebe Su. Two other recruits Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) and Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School) went 2-0 with an 8-3 win over Carol Plakk and Karina Jensrud at No. 1. NYU entered the scoreboard at No. 2 as Anastasia Balyk and Jimena Menendez beat Brandeis Ana Hatfield (Rockford, Ill. / Boylan Central Catholic) and Ella Subramanian (Parkland, FL/Laurel Springs)8-4.

In singles, NYU took an early lead in the first set of matches. Plakk beat Parwani, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 and Jensrud edged Loui, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 to give the Violets the lead. In a key three-set match at No. 3, Menendez held off Hatfield, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.

Brandeis tied things up in the second round of singles. Sia passed Emily Baxter, 6-1, 6-2 and senior Olivia Howe (Cary, NC / Crossroads Flex) had few problems with Robinson, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6, setting the stage for the final game at No. 5.

Denis won Su’s first set, 6-2, but couldn’t hold her off. Su earned late serve breaks in the second and third sets to come back for 7-5, 6-3 wins to earn NYU the win.

Brandeis returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 with a road game at Tufts.
