Some 281,000 tourists have covered the sky in a hot air balloon in 6 months: Minister

Around 281,000 local and international tourists have been transported in more than 14,000 hot air balloon flights across the country, Turkey’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister said.

Speaking to local media at the end of the third Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival on July 24, Adil Karaismailoğlu said: “In the first six months of 2022, some 450 pilots flew some 313 hot air balloons over [the historical region of] Cappadocia, [the western province of Denizli’s tourism hub] Pamukale, [the central Anatolian province of Nevşehir’s] That and [the central Anatolian province of Kayseri’s] Soğanlı.

“Some 14,166 flights have been carried out,” he added.

Giving the number of tourists carried in the flights at 281,000, the Minister stressed: “The number of tourists in hot air balloons has tripled”.

In addition to tourist flights, the number of training flights has also increased.

“The number of training flights increased from 1,681 to 2,681 [compared to last year’s data]“, he expressed.

Cappadocia is a historical region located within the borders of six provinces of Central Anatolia, known for its fairy chimneys, formed from sedimentary rocks and ignimbrite deposits that erupted from ancient volcanoes about three years ago nine million years old.

The Minister also highlighted the production of indigenous balloons.

“In the middle of the festival, about 50 indigenous hot air balloons rose into the sky of Cappadocia,” he said proudly.

The third Cappadocia Balloon Festival ended on July 24, with some 18 hot air balloons with special characters from 12 countries soaring skyward with the 150 tourist balloons every morning during the four-day event.

Officials listed the 12 countries as the UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic, Brazil, Spain, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Turkey.
