Italian teenager rides around the world with a big bike and a stray dog

Alex Sidney joined countless world travelers looking to leave an impression about six months ago. The 19-year-old Italian who lives in Britain is hoping to claim the title of the first person to circumnavigate the world on his big bike, which is made up of two bikes he has welded together.

Sidney started his tour from the Netherlands and arrived this week in Kırklareli, a province on Turkey’s border with Bulgaria. He is accompanied by a puppy he found near the Serbian-Romanian border.

A keen cyclist, Sidney built his first big bike five years ago. He builds eight more and decides to embark on a world tour with the money he makes from their sales. After a ‘trial’ tour of Britain, he left the country on a ship in January to arrive in the Netherlands. He saved more money doing odd jobs in the European country, enough to fund his tour. In March, he begins his European tour.

Following a course along the Rhine, it crossed Germany, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia. In Serbia, he found his puppy companion, who was alone like him. He built a special compartment for the dog he named “Nova” on his bike.

Sidney was in Kırklareli on Tuesday, where he visited a cycling academy. “I love riding and discovering new cultures, new people and nature. It motivated me to hit the road,” he told Anadolu Agency (AA).

He originally planned to start his tour in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his plans. He now plans to ride to Asia. “I plan to visit Cappadocia and only then can I say that I really visited Asia,” he joked. Cappadocia, an ancient region of Anatolia or Asia Minor, is located in central Turkey and is known for its volcanic formations called “fairy chimneys”.
